Lake Moultrie Description

Lake Marion and its sister Lake Moultrie comprise 174,000 acres with 6.5 million gallons of water to create an outdoor paradise. Created in 1938, the lakes were the result of the Santee Cooper Hydroelectric & Navigation Project. Its intended purpose was to impound the Santee River and transform its power into electricity via falling water turning turbines and creating electricity. It was the largest earth-moving project in history, which also created a beautiful recreational oasis. There are over 450 miles of shoreline, which is home to lakefront communities, as well as the communities of wildlife it harbors. Development around the lakes are carefully planned to work in harmony with nature to protect the environment. A key to this plan is a policy to preserve at least 70 percent of the area surrounding the lakes in a natural, undeveloped state. The diverse and abundant wildlife in the Lake Country make it a haven for the sportsman. In addition to the many species of game fish that inhabit the lakes, their shores teem with wildlife. Deer, fox, squirrel, dove, turkey and duck share this beautiful area with the majestic bald eagle, osprey and alligator. Lake Marion and Lake Moultrie are a recreational dream retreat with swimming, boating, water skiing, camping and of course, fishing. Explore the natural splendor of these man-made wonders.

Lake Moultrie is the third largest lake in South Carolina covering over 60,000 acres (240 km2).
